Delft residents are reeling in shock after a 15-year-old girl was killed in the crossfire between feuding gangs.

Police were called to the scene on Tuesday afternoon and found the victim lying on her stomach with a gunshot wound in her right shoulder.

According to reports, the victim was walking to the shop when she was caught in a crossfire between rival gangs.

The teen was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said unknown suspects fled the scene on foot and are yet to be arrested.

“Delft police are investigating a murder case after a shooting incident on (Tuesday) at about 4pm in front of premises in Spitfire Street, the Hague in Delft, where a 15-year-old girl was shot and injured,” said Van Wyk.

Local activist and founder of Women Impacting a Nation (WIN), Farida Ryklief, said residents were scheduled to march to the Delft police station calling for the case to be prioritised.

She said the march would then proceed to the victim’s home to console the family.

Spokesperson of the Delft Community Police Forum (CPF) Charles George said: “The situation in Delft is deteriorating.

“The killing of innocent children who are minding their own business and playing in the streets, enjoying life (is a concern). There are a number of children that (were recently) shot and killed in Delft,” he said.

Last month, an 18-year-old girl was shot and wounded, and a 31-year-old woman was shot and killed in Leiden Avenue in Delft.

Police have asked that anyone with any information on the latest fatal shooting incident to contact Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.
