Pretoria - The Tshwane taxi industry has called on all its members to use the new Gauteng Public Transport Arbitration Office to mitigate against the taxi violence.

Spokesperson for the South African National Taxi Council in Tshwane McDonald Makata said the region appreciated what the Gauteng government had done.

Makata said the entity would transform the taxi industry by providing a platform to bring disputes to the table, ventilate them and reach peaceful resolution “without the use of bullets”.

“I believe it is about time we as the taxi industry acknowledged that the government has done its part to assist us with the launch of this office, because it has been in the pipeline for around three years.

“It is time we create awareness about this arbitration office so that the message goes to the regions and the taxi associations.

“That is why I am making a call to the entire taxi industry to make use of this office and also take information there no matter how small it is. Be it about potential disputes, tension or to report these perpetrators killing other people. We have a proactive role to play to eliminate violence from our business.

Retired Judge Jeremiah Shongwe was appointed to lead the structure.

He will be responsible for arbitrating disputes and issuing arbitration awards to the affected parties.
