Durban – KwaZulu-Natal Premier-elect Nomusa Dube-Ncube is set to be sworn-in during a special sitting of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature on Wednesday.

KZN Legislature spokesperson Wesley Canham confirmed that a special sitting was scheduled for the swearing in of the new premier, but would not give more details.

“Yes I can confirm that there is a special sitting of the KZN Legislature,” the spokesperson said.

This comes after Sihle Zikalala resigned as KZN premier following his defeat at the ANC elective conference.

Dube-Ncube is set to become the ninth KZN premier, and the sixth from the ANC, but more importantly, she will be the first woman to ascend to such a position in KZN.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ANC Women’s League (PTT) said the announcement had catapulted the struggle for women emancipation in the province to the next level.

“We could not have asked for a better gift to celebrate Women’s Month in our province. This is, indeed, a huge milestone which has proven that the struggle for women empowerment is a societal one and that we cannot be free until there is gender equality in our province and our country,” said the league’s provincial coordinator Fikile Masiko.
