Durban - ANC KwaZulu-Natal secretary Bheki Mtolo says they are not concerned over the possible loss of the minority vote in future.

This was in reaction to the sudden resignation of Ravi Pillay as both a Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL) and Member of Executive Council on Wednesday.

His resignation paved the way for ANC KZN Treasurer Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba to be sworn in as an MPL during a special sitting of the KZN Legislature in Mooi River on Wednesday, where Nomusa Dube-Ncube was also elected as the new KwaZulu-Natal premier.

Pillay’s sudden resignation, which is believed to be due to a coming cabinet reshuffle, has raised questions about whether the ANC can still appeal to minorities in future elections.

However, speaking to The Mercury, Mtolo said the ANC was not worried about Pillay’s resignation or its possible impact.

“Pillay represented the people of KwaZulu-Natal, not Indians and therefore we do not think that the ANC will suddenly lose its non-racial character and appeal,” said Mtolo.

He also applauded the big role that Pillay had played over the years as an MEC.

“When you look at the number of houses that were built by the provincial government you will note that a high number of those were built during his term as Housing MEC and many people across the racial spectrum benefited. That is a person who served people of KwaZulu-Natal, not a particular section of the society,” Mtolo.

While Pillay’s future is unclear, it is believed that he will resume with his legal career.
