Medical scheme contributions increased by double the inflation rate last year, but the claims paid by your scheme rose by more than double the inflation rate, an annual check-up on the financial health of schemes shows. Fortunately, investment income earned on schemes' reserves cushioned their losses, but unless claims are curtailed, you are in for more hefty contribution increases - which are especially difficult for people on fixed incomes, such as pensioners. Personal Finance considers these and other issues arising from the Council for Medical Schemes's annual report.
